Surely you have seen the work of the young British designer A Sai Ta, who became famous for his trademark translucent tops with tie-dye prints. Among the fans of the brand is the singer Rosalia, who wears Asai things both on stage and in life (one of her recent favorites is a bag with nunchaku handles). As well as Chinese pop stars GEM and Joey Yoon, whose fans have provided the British brand with great sales in Asia.
However, one of the famous admirers of the designer decided to express her love in a much more impressive way. “I was recently contacted by Jalil Weaver (Rihanna’s stylist and responsible creative director for Fenty),” says Ta. “At first it was about making a few outfits especially for Rihanna, but it all ended up with a discussion of a joint collection.” In case you missed that moment on Instagram, those custom looks are the two dresses the singer took with her on vacation in October. “The pink dress is from the collection we showed in Lagos in April 2019, and will be available online as part of our limited edition capsule by summer 2020.”
Weaver first got to know Ta thanks to Chioma Nnadi, fashion news director at Vogue.com, who told him about the brand back in 2018. When the Asai went on sale at Dover Street Market in London, the stylist took six pieces to dress RiRi in. “Since then, we’ve started to correspond by e-mail and come up with additional outfits especially for her,” the designer tells the background of his “official relationship” with the singer.
“Fenty sent me a lot of fabric samples and told me to do whatever I want because Rihanna already loves my brand and loves to wear it. That’s how it all started, ”says Ta. “They trust me, so I could interpret their brief anyway. I showed them a few tie-dye and fringe options, and then we decided to focus on Asai’s signature style but integrate it into the Fenty aesthetic. ”
The result is a 24-piece wardrobe collection that went on sale at Selfridges in London on 11 December. Naturally, the number of units is limited. “We made the top with ruffles in three colors: white, orange and black, which is new for us, and came up with this especially for the project,” says the designer. There is no doubt that the hunt for tops and dresses from the collaboration will begin.
Last season, Ta decided to skip Women’s Fashion Week to “follow his own instincts.” The end of 2019 turned out to be more than eventful for him. He hopes to have another collaboration with Fenty next year, and of course, all the creative power will be thrown into the work on the new Asai collection. The designer also hopes to finally get to know RiRi personally.
“I saw her at the British Fashion Awards afterparty, but I fell into a stupor. She is my idol, and here we intersect at the entrance, we could just wave to her, but … – Ta sighs. “I’ve worked with a lot of celebrities, but she’s the first person I literally lost my voice at seeing.”
