August TV shows not to be missed

What to watch in the summer finale? Light serials based on serious books, comics and the legendary updated muppets. Our film fan Olya Tretyakova advises.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

  • Premiere Date: August 2020 (to be confirmed)
  • Number of episodes: 6.
  • Genre: action, adventure, drama.
  • Producer: Kari Skogland (The Handmaid’s Tale, Borgia).
  • Cast: Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan.
  • Where to see: Disney+

About what? In the final of the latest Avengers movie, Steve Rogers handed the shield and the title of Captain America to Falcon – Sam Wilson. But it turns out to be not so easy to correspond to this role.

Why watch? The series of superhero films “The Avengers” ended last year, but Marvel realized that no one wanted to part with their favorite characters and launched several series at once. First we will see the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, then Wanda and Vision, Loki and Hawkeye.

As a lover of the Marvel universe, it is difficult for me to explain why I need to drop everything and monitor the date of the premiere of this series. Because it’s Marvel! Winter Soldier! Handsome men in chic suits, stunts, adventures, villainous villains, heroes and the world of comics, which, well, how can you not adore ?!

Muppets Now

  • Premiere Date: August 1
  • Number of episodes: 6.
  • Genre: comedy.
  • Scenario: Kelly Younger (Ralph Against the Internet, The Secret of Coco, Moana)
  • Cast: Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie and the celebrity guests.
  • Where to see: Disney +

About what? The dolls are back in business: they conduct caustic interviews with real celebrities, quarrel, reconcile and put on a fun show.

Why watch? A rhetorical question! Who, well, who has not seen the program about Kermit the frog, Miss Piggy and their friends? Each episode, which looked like a puppet version of an entertainment show, featured real stars. The show ended in 1998, and Kermit memes are still in vogue.

And here’s a new approach. The details of the concept and the names of the invited celebrities are kept secret, even in the trailer about this silence. But the wait is not long. I will definitely not miss the premiere: plunge into childhood is priceless 🙂

Little Birds

  • Premiere Date: August 4th.
  • Number of episodes: 6.
  • Genre: drama, erotica.
  • Producer: Stacy Passon (Concussion, The Punisher)
  • Cast: Juno Temple, Raphael Aklock.
  • Where to see: Sky Atlantic

About what? Tangier, 1955. Lucy is a wealthy American woman who came to Morocco with her fiance. But he suddenly falls in love with a local handsome man.

Why watch? A series based on the collection of erotic stories by Anais Nin, and that says it all. Mainly for those born before 1980. The Franco-American-Cuban writer worked in the adult story genre in the 1940s. Together with her lover, writer Henry Miller, they wrote bespoke erotic and pornographic stories for an anonymous collector at a dollar a page. In my school years (and they happened a long time ago), people (read “teenagers”) passed on her stories, copied by hand, to their most reliable friends.

And, of course, I read the collection of her stories “Little Birds”. Their charm is not so much in eroticism as in sensuality, the anatomy of attraction between people. To convey this without vulgarity, you have to be a real master. It’s very interesting how Stacey Passon, whom I know as the director of the very beautiful and very cold film We Always Lived in the Castle, did.

Lovecraft Country

  • Premiere Date: 16 august
  • Number of episodes: 10.
  • Genre: drama, fantasy, horror.
  • Creators: Misha Green (Subway, Spartacus: Blood and Sand), Jordan Peele (Get Out, We, Black Klansman)
  • Cast: Jonathan Majers, Courtney B. Vance, Jernie Smollett, Wunmi Mosaku, Onjanu Ellis, Elizabeth Debicki
  • Where to see: HBO

About what? USA, 1950s. Atticus, George and Letisha travel across America in search of Atticus’s missing father. On the way, they discover that the country is inhabited not only by people, but also by monsters – not in human form, but fabulous. Though…

Why watch? I know that the name of Howard Lovecraft says little to people who are not very fond of science fiction. But connoisseurs of the genre consider the writer a cult one. He is the author of “The Myths of Cthulhu” about a creepy deity resembling a ferocious octopus.

What does this show have to do with him? Howard Lovecraft, the legend of horror fiction, was a racist. And his country is a country in which there is no place for blacks. The heroes of the series (and it is based on the book of the same name by the writer Matt Ruffy) are just such and at the same time adore the work of Lovecraft. The terrible monsters they meet along the way are not as scary, according to the authors, as people who sort everyone by skin color.

However, Lovecraft Country is not a social statement, but above all a horror film, intelligent and multifaceted. The same as “Get Out” and “We”, on which the creators worked before. However, if you like this genre, you have already marked the date of the premiere of Lovecraft Country without me.

THE GOOD LORD BIRD

  • Genre: drama.

About what? USA, 1850s. In Kansas, a war is unfolding between supporters and opponents of slavery. Why watch? It always seemed to me that Ethan Hawke was an extremely underrated artist. Despite the nominations for Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Tony. And the screenwriter is also underestimated – although even here he has an Oscar nomination (for the film Before Sunset).

But somehow all the awards pass him by. Who knows why. The cinema usually employs so many people that when it finally reaches the viewer, it is no longer possible to guess how much there is left of the original idea. And so – Ethan Hawke has his own project. He wrote the scripts for all episodes and played the main role in the series. And the role is bright, even from the trailer is clear.

The films were produced by the same people to whom we owe the films “Get Out” and “Black Klanman” (and the series “Lovecraft Country”, which is written about above), so, despite the dramatic events, there will be a certain amount of black humor.

By the way, initially the main role was to be played by Liv Schreiber (and “Onion” – Will Smith’s son, Jaden), and in full meter, but that was back in 2014, and since then everything has been replayed more than once. For all my love for Liv Schreiber, I’m sure it’s for the best. I am looking forward to this series.
