Can a lactating woman use essential oils?

After the birth and upon returning from motherhood, the young mother can sometimes feel a lot of contradictory emotions: joy, sadness, fatigue, nostalgia … But if we breastfeed, we can also be confronted with difficulty breastfeeding or having inefficient lactation, which can be particularly difficult.

To cure these ailments, essential oils can be all indicated: aromatherapy has been a perfect ally for a very long time to overcome certain ailments, and this, for the whole family. But beware, if essential oils can be of great help to you, you must be very careful with their use when breastfeeding.

Essential oils when breastfeeding: yes, but not all!

To understand why you have to be vigilant with the use of essential oils when breastfeeding, it is important to understand that the active ingredients present in the essential oils that the mother uses will pass into her breast milk and will therefore be ingested by her baby. Improper use of essential oils can therefore affect baby’s health.

Essential oils prohibited when breastfeeding

If some are quite beneficial when breastfeeding, others are on the contrary prohibited, because potentially dangerous for the baby. Here is the list of essential oils to ban during breastfeeding:

  • Officinal sage
  • Peppermint
  • The globular eucalyptus
  • L’eucalyptus mentholé
  • Rosemary
  • Camphor
  • Lavender stoechade
  • The clove tree
  • Oregano

Be careful, these essential oils can be toxic for your baby, and are also not recommended for children under 10 years old.

The benefits of essential oils

Fortunately, others are risk-free and will help you live the best postpartum life: some essential oils will help you stimulate your lactation and increase milk production, still others can help you get through the baby blues or to relax if you are stressed by your new life as a mom.

1. To promote lactation

The essential oils of fennel and anise, however not recommended during pregnancy, are accepted in pregnant women because they no longer represent a danger for the baby. In addition, they will accompany the young mother who wishes to give the breast and, associated with the usual recommendations, can help them stimulate the flow of milk. But these are not their only benefits, since the essential oil of fennel also has the virtue of helping soothe colic in infants.

To consume these essential oils safely, mix two drops in a tablespoon of honey, swallowed 3 times a day maximum. As soon as lactation has started without any problem, you can stop the treatment. Note that there are also ready-made solutions in pharmacies, ideal for those new to aromatherapy.

2. Against the baby blues and stress

Essential oils are second to none for calming negative emotions and learning to deal with stress. They are incredibly effective in coping with difficult situations, changes and major upheavals. They are therefore naturally recommended after a birth to deal with the baby blues. If you suffer from it, you can use four essential oils:

  • Fine lavender
  • The mandarin
  • Le petit grain bigarate
  • Marjoram with shells

Here, it is rather a massage applied to the solar plexus or to the lower back that is recommended. Dilute 2 drops of essential oil in a spoon of neutral vegetable oil and massage. Warning: never apply directly to the skin and test the mixture to verify that you are not allergic before applying generously. You can also pour this cocktail into the bath water … provided you still have time to take one!

3. To heal the nipples

Do you have sore breasts, sensitive nipples or suffer from cracks? Once again, essential oils can give you relief. Here, we will use lavender again, but this time officinal, for its anti-infectious, antibacterial (which will certainly prevent you from mastitis) and healing properties.

To use them, massage is also recommended: dilute two drops of essential oil in a little virgin oil, and gently massage your nipple after feeding to heal it.
