Dior Bar: the story of the legendary jacket

In 2020, the famous Dior Bar jacket turns 73. This thing turned the fashion world upside down and went down in history forever. It all started in February 1947, when Christian Dior staged his first show. The collection consisted of 90 looks, which featured the same jacket with an accentuated waist and a spectacular peplum. Together with the Corolle fluffy skirt, this duo has become the personification of the New Look silhouette, a symbol of femininity and high tailoring.

The jacket appeared in the post-war period, when girls yearned for a holiday, lightness and beauty. Christian Dior managed to accurately convey this mood and guess the desires of fashionistas of those years. Since its first appearance, the Dior Bar jacket has featured in almost all of the brand’s couture collections. After the sad departure of the designer, the tradition is carefully honored by his talented successors.

In 1957, Yves Saint Laurent came to the post of creative director of the Dior fashion house. Three years later, he was drafted into the army, and the creative team was led by Marc Boan. Later there were Gianfranco Ferre, John Galliano, Bill Gaten and Raf Simons. In 2016, Dior was headed by Maria Grazia Chiuri. Each creative director during his work in the fashion house has presented more than one variation on the theme of the legendary Dior Bar jacket. Galliano, for example, emphasized explosive colors, while Simons emphasized architectural cut. The current creative director – Maria Grazia Chiuri – experiments with fabrics and textures in each collection, creating the most real works of art.
