Many modern techniques assume that the dyeing of the strands does not start from the roots, but a few centimeters below. It became a salvation for those who do not love dye your hair often, because in this case it is possible to refresh the color of highlighted hair less often – the dark roots are conceived by the master and do not look sloppy.
But do not confuse the result of the work of a professional stylist and the usual skip of visiting a beauty salon. Unfortunately, dark roots grown in conditions of complete dyeing of the strands will not look beautiful, and here’s why: when dyeing, for example, in ombre technique, the master makes a special color stretch to create a natural transition effect. When the hair roots grow back after standard coloring, no natural transition occurs – we see a dull, even border between the two shades.
Especially for such cases, there is root highlighting in the world, which we will talk about today.
Root highlighting is a method of lightening overgrown roots, which allows you to elegantly mask them and avoid re-staining the strands along the entire length.
This beauty ritual is a real lifesaver for everyone who permanently dyes strands blonde or light blond color… Hair grows back rather quickly, and too frequent chemical intervention negatively affects its quality.
Why is this necessarily highlighting, and not the usual continuous coloring of the roots in the same tone as the bulk of the hair? It’s simple: veil technique (fine highlighting), which is used during root highlighting, allows you to achieve the most natural effect.
This dyeing method has both advantages and disadvantages. However, there are not so many of the latter. Let’s start with the pros.
- The method allows you not to dye the entire mass of hair too often.
- Thanks to root highlighting, the strands retain a neat, well-groomed appearance for a long time.
- Zonal coloring, like its correction, is cheaper than a complete hair color renewal.
- Unlike the standard single color root highlighting, root highlighting gives the most natural effect – no one will notice that you have tinted the roots separately.
Let’s move on to the disadvantages. To be honest, we were able to find only one disadvantage of root highlighting: it is quite difficult to perform it correctly. at homeif you are not a professional. The veil technique involves complex cross-dyeing of the strands, as well as lightly stretching the color further down the strands, so that the result looks natural and neat. Therefore, it is better to entrust root highlighting to an experienced salon master, who will pick up the shade perfectly and perform the staining professionally.
SalonSecret’s expert recipe for rehab after bad home highlights. Change to a mild shampoo for a few weeks: for example Biolage R.A.W. Rebalancewhich has a soothing effect on the scalp and gently cleanses the hair thanks to rosemary and willow bark extract in the composition. Massage oil Rebalance will help restore the natural protection of the scalp, and for extreme restoration of damaged areas of hair, use a pre-conditioner Matrix Re-Bond.
The process of performing root highlighting does not differ on different initial hair shades, with the exception of one stage – lightening. Highlighting on light strands is done with little or no discoloration, but the darker they are, the more necessary it becomes preliminary clarification zones at the roots. One thing is completely unimportant – a haircut. The procedure is approximately the same for short and long hair.
This procedure is incredibly relevant for brunettes and brown-haired women who color their hair in bright hues, because in this case the difference in color during regrowth is most noticeable! Take a look at how natural the result of root highlighting looks on dark hair. Balayage will be a great addition: it will add volume to the length of the hairstyle and will become a natural continuation of the pattern of light highlights.
How to maintain the salon effect at home? After highlighting, enter the range of care Redken Brownlightsdesigned specifically to emphasize light highlights on dark strands (and at the same time neutralize warm undertones). The range includes shampoo and conditioner with precisely adjusted pigment concentration. We recommend lotion as thermal protection Satinwear, it slows down the fading of the shade and does not weigh down the hair at all.
Even owners of a natural blonde sometimes want to dilute the natural shade of their hair or, for example, get the effect of burnt-out strands. Therefore, root highlighting is also performed on light hair, and it looks very beautiful. In addition, this technique allows you to camouflage gray hair.
How to maintain the salon effect at home? Pigmented care also does not hurt, but its choice depends on the level of hair tone. So, for cold blondes, toning shampoo is suitable. L’Oréal Professionnel Blondifier Cool – it gently cleanses the hair and fights against unwanted yellowness, which may appear some time after visiting the salon, when the toning begins to wash out. To maintain the cosmic beauty of silvery blondes, we recommend a conditioner with a mix of blue and purple pigments. L’Oreal Professional Silver… AND Matrix So Silver will perfectly cope with the correction of yellowness on very light hair and on fake gray hair.
Light brown hair, depending on the shade, may need more or less intense lightening of the strands before root highlighting. The result looks very neat and natural!
How to maintain the salon effect at home? In addition to products with pigments (for example, shampoo Matrix Brass Off or Kérastase Ultra-Violet) you will need masks with antioxidants to protect your hair from porosity and external damage. Despite the fact that we are only talking about dyeing the roots, and not the entire mass of hair, preparation for the process includes several important stages. As we already noted, this is a complex procedure, but a professional colorist can highlight even with closed eyes. We have not checked, but we willingly believe!
The master will need:
- foil or a special highlighting cap;
- protective gloves;
- container for the brightening composition;
- container for mixing dye and oxidizer;
- paint brush;
- hair clips;
- thin comb.
In order to perform root highlighting, you need to prepare:
- brightening composition (your colorist will probably choose the most gentle, such as Matrix Light Master with bonder or highlighting cream L’Oréal Pro Majimèches);
- coloring composition (persistent or toning).
Basal highlighting, as we have already noted above, is a rather complicated and time-consuming process. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to repeat it at home, because the veil technique involves cross-staining the strands. Therefore, if you are worried about the final result, trust a professional colorist who will not make mistakes and achieve the most natural effect. Moreover, it would be best to contact the master who performed the previous staining: it will be easier for him to navigate, choose the right shade and highlighting step.
In order for you to better imagine the process of root highlighting, we have compiled a short step-by-step scheme for its implementation (of course, not without the participation of our stylists).
- Dry hair is divided into several zones. Sometimes it is enough to limit yourself to four: upper, occipital, left and right.
- The highlighting step (the order of the set of strands) and the width of the strands are determined.
- Staining starts from the occipital area.
- Foil is placed under the strand, and then a lightening composition is applied precisely to the regrown root zone.
- The strand is tightly wrapped in foil.
- The process is repeated on each selected strand of the occipital zone, then on the strands on the right and left sides, as well as on the crown.
- After the brightening composition is washed off, you can proceed to staining. For this, gentle toning dyes.
- The process is repeated with the dye composition along the entire length from root to tip and without the use of foil.
- The paint is applied not only to the areas that were lightened this time, but also with stretching along the strands along the length to achieve a natural tone transition.
As you can see, the process is no different from the usual highlighting, but it is carried out directly from the roots.
