Soft solutions against the loss of voices

Cold snap, stress, laryngitis, excess vocalizations… Sometimes our profession also forces us to give voice to people. In general, our aphonias are banal and benign. First thing to do: keep silent, complete if possible, to put our vocal cords to rest. And treat them gently: homeo, phyto and aromatherapy, do not lack the resources to bring them up to speed. In most cases, 2 to 3 days of a well-conducted treatment will get us back. But if, beyond a week, things do not improve, you should consult. The loss of the voice can result from an allergy, a gastroesophageal reflux, a lesion, a polyp… which then require a thorough ENT examination.

Plants to the rescue
Antiseptics, anti-inflammatories, decongestants, fluidifying: nothing better than plants to get back on the road to vocal health. In infusions and gargles take slippery elm, marshmallow or licorice, for their softening effect. And bet on chamomile, bramble, blackcurrant or erysimum, “the” plant par excellence for the voiceless (also called velar or hedge mustard), to combat inflammation. As for essential oils, take 3 times a day, for 48 hours, 1 drop of EO of cypress and a drop of EO of thyme in a spoonful of honey. Dr Jean-Christophe Charrié * also recommends propolis, to be used in the form of a tincture: “radical when you are in pain, this beehive product combines anesthetic power with antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. ”

Ready-to-use solutions: “Phytaroma throat spray by Naturactive” based on plants and essential oils, including Plantain extract which helps to soothe the mucous membranes. The “throat” sprays from Phytosun Aroms, “throat Respir ‘” from Comptoir Aroma, or Activox, from Arkopharma, which combine propolis with essential oils.

Homeopathy on a case-by-case basis
We first look for the cause.Following the recommendations of Dr Albert-Claude Quemoun **, take 2 granules 3 times a day of: Arnica montana 9CH if you have strained your voice too much, Rhus toxicodendron 5CH if you are speechless at wake up but find it again throughout the day, Aconitum napellus 5CH if it was a dry cold snap that turned it off, Dulcamara 5CH if it was a damp cold snap and Arum triphyllum if your voice comes and goes without you can master it. Finally, if it is stage fright or stress that paralyzes your vocal cords, take Gelsemium 9CH, 3 granules every hour.

There are also specific preparations that help fight against extinction and, more generally, vocal fatigue: Homeovox by Boiron and Voxpax by Lehning

A spa treatment to re-educate your voice

Home-made recipes
Gargles with lemon or cinnamon: two grandmother’s remedies that have proven themselves: gargle with lukewarm salted and lemon water, or boil a cinnamon stick in 25 cl of water for 5 minutes, add to it a tablespoon of honey, let cool, drink slowly in small sips.

The infusion of cantors: the sovereign remedy for singers: boil 30 g of dried erysimum and 10 g of liquorice in 1 l of water until reduced by a third. Add 200 g of honey, heat until obtaining the consistency of a syrup. Put it in a bottle and take 4 to 5 teaspoons throughout the day.
