How it works ?
Of course, the success of the smoking cessation mainly depends on the subject’s motivation to quit smoking. We don’t stop smoking to please our loved ones, but because we have firmly decided, otherwise thefailure is almost assured. It is once the decision is made that themedical hypnosis can be of great help. Indeed, this specific technique is based on a process of suggestion aimed at amplifying the desire to quit smoking that lies dormant more or less secretly in each smoker. To mobilize his positive thoughts in favor of a withdrawal, the hypnotized subject will use the arguments put forward by the practitioner which resonate the most in him. Does he want to quit smoking to stop inhaling toxic substances? To breathe better? To regain his freedom? Each person has their own motivations. On the other hand, hypnosis also makes it possible to reduce the symptoms of lack inseparable from smoking cessation.
The different approaches
There are five different techniques to help an individual quit smoking:
- direct suggestion: the patient must change his behavior in order to get out of his grip;
- modification of perception: the practitioner suggests to his patient to change his perception of his tobacco addiction;
- projection: hypnosis helps the patient to imagine his life without tobacco; we are talking about hypnotherapy;
- aversion: hypnosis makes it possible to suggest to the subject that tobacco is synonymous with nausea; it is hypnoaversion;
- empowerment: this method, also called self-hypnosis, aims to make the patient master of his approach and to become autonomous.
How does a hypnosis session take place?
During a preliminary individual interview, the hypnotherapist assesses the level of dependence of his patient. It also determines its degree of motivation, as well as the various risks of temptation that the subject may be confronted with subsequently. This questioning essentially aims to define a hypnosis strategy and the various suggestions that the practitioner will be able to use. As a general rule, the actual hypnosis sessions can be conducted individually or in small groups (three to six people). The hypnotherapist gradually brings his patient to a state of hypnosis which must be pleasant and relaxed. This type of practice does not lead to total loss of control, as can be seen during shows for the general public, which is why the subject will remember what happened during the session. Once he has succeeded in taking his patient to a hypnotic state, the practitioner begins his suggestion protocol in order to teach the unconscious to act differently or to change its view of things. But in all cases, the subject remains a major player in his weaning. The hypnotherapist is only used to detect and bring out underlying resources.
Where to find a hypnotherapist? Like a therapist, it is not always easy to find a competent hypnotherapist. To avoid consulting a charlatan, it is better to make sure of several criteria before going to consult one: level of training in psychology and hypnosis, technique used … However, professional skills are not the only parameter since quality of the patient / practitioner relationship is of paramount importance. It greatly influences the effectiveness of the hypnotic method, which must be performed in perfect collaboration and with full confidence. Beware of charlatans, however, because the practice of hypnosis is currently not regulated by an official title or by a regulatory body.
