Weekend neurosis: causes, symptoms and how to get rid of the problem

We often hear people complain about weekend neurosis. However, few people know what the essence of this disease is, what danger it poses in itself, and how to avoid it.

What is weekend neurosis?

Hardworking people often suffer from problems like weekend neurosis. The long-awaited vacation becomes a real torture for a person who is used to living at the fast pace of a working day, and not chilling at home on the couch. He just doesn’t know what to do with the free time. He is increasingly beginning to be assailed by strange thoughts that he is not in his place and that life is passing by.

At the end of the 20th century, Viktor Frankl, a famous psychologist and psychotherapist, author of logotherapy, as well as the world famous book “Man in Search of Meaning”, introduced the term “weekend neurosis” or, it is also called “Sunday neurosis”. This is a mental illness that manifests itself as a feeling of anxiety in the abrupt cessation of any habitual activity.

To cope with this problem, people begin to succumb to bad habits. For example, they can clog up their free time with endless TV watching, start drinking alcohol in considerable quantities, or simply eat everything that is not nailed down. These are just some of the most harmless ways. It so happens that over the weekend the person did not rest at all, but only drove himself into serious stress.

The reasons

To understand how to avoid Sunday neurosis and its consequences, you must first familiarize yourself with the reasons. So who is most affected by this condition?

Workaholism is the main cause of weekend neurosis. For workaholics, there is nothing more important than their work, they devote all their free time to it, because they simply cannot do otherwise. The whole point of life for such a person is to work, but this goes beyond all boundaries and turns into a serious obsession. When a workaholic is going to rest, he is immediately covered with thoughts that life is slipping through his fingers. He thinks that if he stops for even a minute, he will immediately be on the sidelines of life and will never succeed again.

Loneliness is another common cause. When a person has no one to spend a day off with, it’s no wonder they don’t want to come back from work. Being left alone with their thoughts, such people cannot stand it and begin to fill their free time with all possible things, no matter how ridiculous they may be. For example, in this state, people can go to the store and buy a million unnecessary things, start unnecessary repairs in the apartment. If you do not do this, then the person plunges into severe depression, from which he cannot get out for a long time.

Lack of hobbies is another important factor. Often a person is looking forward to the day off, but when it comes, it turns out that there is absolutely nothing to do. This can easily happen if the range of interests of this person is limited to endless work and evening viewing of one episode of the series. In this case, by lunchtime, you are dying of boredom, finishing your fourth glass of coffee at the kitchen table. And there is still a whole day ahead, which needs to be filled with at least some events. Here, the not very useful ways to cope with the problem, already discussed above, enter the field. A person has no choice but to spend the rest of the weekend in front of the TV, while eating everything that was found in the refrigerator.

Symptoms

Like most neurotic disorders, weekend neurosis is mainly manifested by an unstable state of mind. Most often these are disturbing thoughts, unexplained panic, as well as depression, a feeling of boredom, which is very difficult to get rid of.

Vegetative symptoms may well not appear, they are the result of severe prolonged stress. Among them are signs such as headache, nausea, dizziness, high or low blood pressure. Tremor, muscle cramps are possible. Sleep disorders are often observed – insomnia or, conversely, drowsiness and lethargy throughout the day.

How to get rid of the problem?

To solve the problem of weekend neurosis, you can use the most common methods, but they are quite capable of helping if you make enough effort.

Finding something to do is the first way. Absolutely every person can do this, because there are millions of different hobbies in the world. An interesting thing will help those who simply have nowhere to put the time freed from work.

Making new acquaintances will not be difficult either, because today everyone has access to social networks. So you can find yourself a friend of interests and take time with a joint vacation or just pleasant conversations on topics that interest both of you.

Scheduling things for the weekend can help you avoid wasting time if you really don’t want to just forget about your daily worries. But you can plan not only work matters. Perhaps making to-do lists will force you to take a healthy look at how obsessed you are at work and start doing things that are truly relaxing.

The best way to cope with neurosis is to rethink values. If, after trying all the methods presented in this article, you still cannot spend your well-deserved day off in peace and tranquility, then you should definitely set your priorities correctly. You need to understand that work is not the most important thing in life, and much more important is the mental and emotional health of a person. It is necessary to find a balance between work, personal life and self-interest. Then your idea of the world will change forever, and your life will be transformed.
