Lacuan Smith’s display at the top of the Empire State Building has restored faith in American fashion to many insiders. The holiday that fashion was in the middle of the 2000s – something like this can be described what is happening. Models paraded in lace and rhinestones paired with French poodles, and the panorama of New York opened outside the window.
Lacuan launched his brand back in 2013. The total soldier-out of his dresses happened only in 2020, in the midst of a pandemic. His client list includes Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé and Rihanna.
Lacuan was born and raised in Queens, one of New York’s most crime-ridden neighborhoods. As a child, he admired his grandmother and other women who became role models for him. He was not taken to the best American fashion schools – FIT and Parsons. Instead, Smith immediately founded his own brand, whose history began with the production of leggings (it was 2013, and almost everyone had leggings with a space print). Lacuan was a designer, model, and salesperson. This did not stop him from dressing celebrities in his leggings. And then enter the Forbes list of “30 to 30” – already as a designer of evening dresses.
The secret to success? Instagram. His dresses, like the show itself, look spectacular in the frame. “The Smith Show was created and hosted for the Internet – writes journalist Janelle Okvodu. “Everything from the poodles on the runway on Instagram to drones with cameras gliding overhead served an online audience that supported Smith from the beginning.”
Corsets, translucent fabrics, strategic cutouts – all this makes clothes even more attractive. See for yourself by looking at the Fall / Winter 2021 collection.
