For many, the news of Clare Waite Keller’s departure from the post of creative Director of the French brand came as a shock, but in the fashion world, there has been talk of the possibility of such changes for a long time. The reason for this is the industry’s active game of “musical chairs”, when over the course of several years a dozen creative Directors in many brands were replaced. And even the pandemic did not deter LVMH from making such major changes.
Waite Keller was appointed creative Director of Givenchy in 2017, replacing Ricardo Tisci, who had worked for the company for 12 years. Then Claire became the first woman at the head of the French fashion house, founded in 1952 by Hubert de Givenchy.
There were high hopes for wait Keller: Givenchy CEO Philippe Fortunato said in an interview with BOF that the brand plans to increase sales to the level of Dior with a revenue of 2 billion euros. Waite Keller’s work for Givenchy brought the company 400 million euros a year, which was not enough. Along with the designer, Fortunato also left the company, and Renaud de Lescain, who ran the Dior fashion house in the United States, was appointed the new CEO. But despite her short career at Givenchy, Waite Keller managed to increase the fashion house’s sales, put the brand back on the haute couture map and make the brand popular internationally thanks to her work with Meghan Markle. We recall the most significant achievements of the designer as creative Director of Givenchy.
Prior to joining the French fashion house, Claire Waite Keller successfully led Chloé for six years. At Givenchy, the designer took up the women’s and men’s ready-to-wear lines, as well as the haute couture collection and accessories. In total, the designer produced ten collections a year, taking into account the off-season lines and the main ones. In the collections of haute couture, wait Keller sang the songs of Hubert de Givenchy, admiring and reviving his iconic creations. Experimenting with materials and style, the designer managed to make an impression every season. In the fall of 2018, Claire Waite Keller dedicated the collection to the founder of the brand.
Working on couture creations did not go unnoticed by the designer. More and more celebrities began to choose Waite Keller’s work for the red carpet of the most prestigious events. The designer has worked closely with Gal Gadot, Charlize Theron, Rami Malek, Julianne Moore and many others. Rooney Mara became an Ambassador of the brand and appeared at many events in the latest Givenchy outfits.
Meghan Markle’s wedding dress
The most striking and significant achievement of Claire was working with Meghan Markle. Wait Keller designed and sewed a wedding dress for the future Duchess. Thanks to this work, the designer was able to make himself known to the whole world and attract a new audience for Givenchy.
Designer of the year
In 2018, Clare Waite Keller was awarded the designer Of the year award at the Fashion Awards. The award was presented to her by Meghan Markle herself. Later that year, the name of the British designer appeared in the list of the 100 most influential people in the fashion industry Time 100 List.
