Why does the body need salt?

Why does the body need salt and what does its deficiency affect?

Table salt consists of chemical elements necessary for the normal functioning of the body. In particular, if the intake of sodium chloride is completely stopped, the following can occur:

  • The normal functioning of muscle fibers will become impossible, muscle contractions will stop. Moreover, both skeletal and smooth muscles, which make up the internal organs, will suffer.
  • The normal process of digestion will be disrupted. There will be a failure in the synthesis of gastric juice and a number of enzymes necessary for digestion.
  • The synthesis of a number of hormones, in particular, adrenaline, will be interrupted or reduced.
  • The synthesis of glucose in the body will be disrupted, which is fraught with disorders of carbohydrate and energy metabolism.
  • Since sodium is an important element involved in maintaining homeostasis, its deficiency will disrupt the water-electrolyte balance.

Even from a brief description of the consequences of completely eliminating table salt, it becomes obvious that the body needs salt.

How much salt does the body need?

  • According to the recommendations of the World Health Organization, 5 g of table salt per day is enough for the body of a healthy adult to function normally. In childhood, the daily intake of sodium chloride is even lower.

Speaking about the daily intake of salt, one should take into account the entire amount of salt that enters the body with food, that is, all sodium chloride contained in foods.

How to fix the situation?

Like many other metabolic disorders, hyponatremia with a deficiency of sodium chloride can be corrected.

If you find one or more of the symptoms associated with salt deficiency, the first step is to seek medical advice, who will prescribe the necessary tests. Thus, it will become clear whether there is a sodium deficiency in the body, and if so, how far the violation has gone.

The next step would be selection of treatment… The following methods are used to correct deviations from the norm in hyponatremia:

  • taking diuretics to remove excess water and increase the concentration of sodium in the blood plasma;
  • adjusting the dose of drugs that reduce the salt content, or, if possible, canceling their intake;
  • administration of saline by intravenous infusion;
  • the use of special drugs that help restore the water-salt balance in the body.

Despite a lot of talk about the dangers of salt, you should not completely abandon it. Such an extreme can cause many disturbances in the work of the human body, up to the development of severe, life-threatening conditions. The best option is to stick to the recommended salt intake.
